Matt started playing the trumpet at age 8. Inspired by his trombone playing dad to play an instrument in the brass family, trumpet was the next logical choice to him. Matt studied at Birmingham conservatoire where he graduated from the Jazz course with BMus Honours. Whilst in Birmingham Matt had the opportunity to study and perform with the BBC Big Band, Mike Gibbs, Jean Toussaint, Percy Pursglove and Dave Holland. Matt recorded his debut album, ‘Resilience’, in his final year at Birmingham Conservatoire which featured music composed by Matt for quintet, nonet and fifteen piece big band.

Since graduating Matt has been active as a leader running a dectet, creating The Forgotten Fairground Project and also performing as a duo with pianist Phil Merriman. He also works with The Jonathan Silk Big Band, The Young Pilgrims and Mike Fletcher Big Band and has performed with Dan Weiss, Andrew D’Angelo and The Three Belles.

Matt is also very active as an educator. He teaches trumpet and also coaches Jazz bands and brass groups at Kingston Grammar School and Wimbledon High School. He also had the pleasure of being co-director for well renowned community big band, The Notebenders which was started by Andy Hamilton MBE.
